The Hengduan Mountains are characterized by high altitudes and chilly weather, while the summers bring intense dry heat. Local women plant hemp in spring, and by autumn, it is ready for harvest. The year's entire yield is hand-spun into thread, enough to produce just one bolt of hemp fabric, known in the Naxi language as "Pei." This is the most solemn fabric in the region, akin to the vibrantly embroidered patterns. It is used to create ceremonial attire for significant life events such as coming-of-age ceremonies and weddings. Each piece reflects the heartfelt intentions and care of the weaving women for their families.
