Dali Health Hammer

The hammerhead is made from Guizhou Dali hand-embroidered fabric, with the blue cotton thread used in the fabric dyed by the weavers at home using indigo leaves from the local Nanbanlan plant. The cotton thread wrapped around the handle is also dyed using natural plant dyes: gray is derived from walnut leaves and chestnut shells, while blue comes from indigo dye. The internal filling of the health hammer is selected from five-year-old mugwort from Funiu Mountain in Nanyang, Henan. After prolonged use, the hammerhead will become slightly softer.

The health hammer with a blue-wrapped handle will transfer some of the indigo dye to the hammerhead fabric during the hand-wrapping process. For those who mind this, it is recommended to choose the version with a gray handle.

“Tiao Hua” was once a common weaving technique in Dali, often seen in the old fabrics of the Miao and Dong ethnic groups in Guizhou. During the Tiao Hua process, a needle of similar thickness to a knitting needle is used to hook the weft threads, counting numbers—one thread, three threads, one by one—precisely picking through the vertical warp threads, eventually forming embroidery-like patterns. Therefore, Tiao Hua is also known as "counting threads," and the elder women would say, "we're stitching the fabric."
